Fuji (High)-Way Update

The HOA board is still committed to working with the City of Richland in making Fuji Way a safer street for our homeowners and children.  We recently completed an email survey and received 77 responses.  It was clear that there is an overwhelming concern for the amount of transient traffic and speed along Fuji Way.  The HOA will continue to work with City officials in another attempt to address the street’s traffic issues.

During recent meetings we learned that the radar trailer that was used for the traffic studies actually recorded traffic and speeds BOTH directions although the readout was only on one side.  This means our recorded numbers are not as startling as we thought, but are still substantial and the increase needs to be addressed.  Our 2010 Fuji Way survey is actually 5,006 cars per week and the 2012 survey is just under 9,000 cars per week.  This showed a volume increase of 46% in two years.  The lower number of cars is good news, but we also ran the speed data and discovered more individuals are driving faster now then two years ago.

With the assist of homeowner Bernie Beldin, the HOA met with city officials and presented our numbers and speed data.  We had a very good conversation regarding the installation of some type of speed control.  The City appears to be in favor of the HOA working with the City Street Department and the City Police Department simultaneously so that concerns, information and a possible solution can be developed.

Please remember that the city streets are not owned by Applewood Estates and the HOA has no authority to block streets or set our own speed controls.  Our responsibility is to inform the City of the issues.  The HOA has gone far above and beyond this scope of responsibility.  However, we has homeowners can help by driving slower, reporting traffic complaints and cutting back bushes or landscape that obstructs the line-of-sight at intersections.  It will ultimately be the responsibility of the City to curb the traffic and speed issues.
