Summer Watering

As the temperatures begin to heat up in Richland, watering your yard is essential to make sure your grass and plants look their best in Applewood Estates. Follow these guidelines to help ensure you are preventing pooling and property watering your yard.
Set up your watering schedule through your sprinkler system control panel so you don't have to remember to turn them on each day and to ensure you are not over or under-watering. Out biggest issue in Applewood is over-watering.
We recommend the following advice:
Your lawn grows within the first foot of soil, so it's important to keep that layer appropriately moist. We recommend watering 3/8" every other day during the months of April, May, September, and October. Then 1/2" every other day during the months of June, July, and August.
Your grass can grow in overly wet soil, but over-watering isn't good for your lawn. When water is constantly available near the service, your grass and plant roots remain short. That dramatically limits their ability to withstand dry conditions.
The Tri-Cities area is known to have long periods of dry weather and conditioning your lawn is beneficial. By using the every other day method mentioned above, you should have satisfactory results for your lawn and plants.
Depending on the type of sprinklers you use, you may want to calculate your sprinkler output using the tuna can method (a pie plate will work as well).
1. Set one or two tuna cans or pie plates under each zone of your sprinkler system.
2. Sprinkle until the depth of the water in the can or pie plate reaches 1" and then note how long this takes.
3. Don't sprinkle again until the top two or three inches of soil are dry to the touch.
4. Based on how long it took to collect 1" of water and how much time elapsed between dryness*, you can determine how long you will need to program your sprinklers for the above 3/8" and 1/2". *extreme heat or dry conditions will vary your testing results but not by much.
