Raccoons Spotted in Applewood
Posted on Jul 17th, 2019

The HOA wants to inform homeowners that raccoons have been seen in Applewood Estates.  The pictured raccoon was taken this morning in the the backyard of 1309 Gala Way.

They usually prefer heavily wooded areas with a reliable source of water, but more and more are venturing into human populated areas with gardens for an easy meal.  Though raccoons are more than happy to make your yard their homes, they can be vicious when approached by homeowners.  We should be particularly cautious of approaching raccoons because they are common carriers of rabies, roundworms and leptospirosis, according to The Human Society.

We suggest the following:
  • Make sure trash cans are secure - this can be done with a bungee cord.
  • Clean external garbage cans regularly with bleach and water - this will keep aroma of food to a minimum.
  • If you have dogs or cats and leave pet food outside, make sure it gets taken in before sunset - raccoons are nocturnal and travel around at night.
  • If you have bird feeders outside, be sure to hang it someplace inaccessible to them.
As for gardens, there are many things you can do to protect them - please read the article at the below website link.
