Possible Solicitor Scam
Posted on Aug 15th, 2014
Homeowners in Applewood Estates have reported two young males asking to talk to homeowners for college points; then later asked for money. When one homeowner asked for a solicitor's license, they said they would come back in ten minutes and never returned.
Richland Police has reported that it has occurred in the past and they believe they are pan-handlers. Kennewick Police also took many calls on 08/14/14 regarding solicitors that arrive in vans. These vans drop off young people to sell magazines, cleaning products and other services. Many times they talk fast and use high pressure sales tactics. They normally do not have a business license and try to get in and out of a neighborhood fast before someone calls the police.
Please remember that if you have a solicitor come to your door, ask what company they work for and ask to see their business license. City officials say that all solicitors need to have a business license and should have a Solicitor Card to show homeowners. This card ensures that all solicitors have been given a criminal background check by the police.
If you don't feel comfortable asking them questions, politely tell them you are not interested and shut the door. Then notify the Richland Police Department to come check them out by calling the non-emergency number at 628-0333. Please try to get a description of the solicitor and what direction of travel they are heading.
There is strength in numbers! Together we can make Applewood Estates a safe place to live.
