Fuji Way Update
Posted on Apr 28th, 2013

It is with regret the Applewood HOA Board posts this web update.  We would like to inform all homeowners that the City has notified the AHOA that they will not be moving forward with any traffic calming measures along Fuji Way.  They have told us the speeds registered are on par with other similar "Neighborhood Collector" streets and in the 85th percentile which is in the acceptable range.  They have also told us the speeds do not meet the criteria for speed humps with regard to a Resolution that the City Council adopted in 2011 and that stop signs are not appropriate devices for speed control per the manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).  They have assured the AHOA board they will continue to work with the Richland Police Department on speed enforcement.

Please know one main goal of your HOA is to address safety issues in our community development and we understand there is a traffic issue along Fuji Way.  For several years the HOA has worked and met with city officials and departments to obtain several unofficial traffic studies and encourage traffic enforcement but most important to pass on homeowner concerns.  The AHOA board is confident that it has exhausted all it can do with addressing this traffic issue.

Please know that the AHOA does not own the streets within Applewood and has no control over how the city makes their final decision when addressing the traffic volume and speed issues.  However, we can continue our efforts in educating our homeowners
but many drivers that travel Fuji Way do not live in Applewood Estates.  On a more positive note, the board and some homeowners were able to get the Richland School District to move our children's bus stops off of Fuji Way and on safer and less traveled streets.

The board would like to thank everyone who worked on the project and homeowners who supported the board's effort.  Your AHOA will continue to monitor traffic volume/speed on Fuji Way and report our findings to the City.
